Why UFC 300 is the best UFC card ever
From top to bottom, the UFC Brass has absolutely stacked the UFC 300 card. Every fight on the card includes at least one ranked fighter, with the final three fights all having a belt on the line. The night starts with a bang, as former UFC Champions Cody Garbrandt and Deiveson Figueiredo square off in hopes of climbing the bantamweight rankings. There's no doubt this is the best opening fight in UFC history in terms of the skill levels of the fighters.
Now getting into the title fights on the card, it starts with Justin Gaethje looking to defend his BMF belt against a newcomer to the lightweight division, Max Holloway. Fireworks and a bonus are guaranteed for this fight between two legends of the sport known for their boxing abilities and toughness in the octagon. Holloway's move to lightweight division will answer many questions for UFC fans who have been enamored by his seemingly iron chin which is the reason he has never been knocked down or out in his illustrious 32-fight Pro MMA career despite facing some of the hardest hitters in the world. The goal of the fight will be no different for Holloway, except this time he is faced with the challenge of fighting the hardest hitter in the lightweight division, heavier than the opponents faced throughout his career as a featherweight. If Holloway can pass this challenge, he will further solidify himself as one of the most durable fighters to ever step in the UFC octagon.
The next title fight is in the Women's Strawweight division between reigning, defending champion Zhang Weili and up-and-comer Yan Xiaonan. Xiaonan, ranked first in the division is deserving of this title shot riding a two-fight winning streak against top 10 ranked contenders in Jessica Andrade and Mackenzie Dern. Her 8-2 record in the UFC has set up a highly anticipated China vs China matchup for the undisputed strawweight championship. This will be Weili's second title defense of her second title reign. making her one of the dominant fighters of the division in recent years. The only UFC fighter to solve the current champion is Rose Namajunas, who has two victories against Zhang in championship fights. The only other loss of Weili's professional MMA career came at the hands of Bo Meng in 2013 in her first-ever Pro MMA fight. This matchup has all the makings to be a back-and-forth affair between the two best Chinese fighters in the UFC.
The final title fight and main event of UFC 300 is for the Light Heavyweight Championship as current Champion Alex Pereira is set to take on former champion Jamahal Hill. The challenger, Hill, was never defeated to lose his belt but rather was forced to vacate it due to injury following his victory over Pereira's coach/training partner, Glover Teixeira, that earned him the belt. There is not necessarily bad blood between the two, but revenge is certainly on the mind of Alex Pereira who looks to avenge his friend's loss to Hill. Jamahal Hill has gone on the record recently stating he is excited for the challenge Pereira brings as one of the best stand-up strikers the UFC has ever seen, but thoroughly believes he has the tools to knock out the champion. As for the rest of the division, Aleksandar Rakic takes on Jiri Prochazka on the same card which will likely be a number-one contender fight with the winner taking on the winner of the UFC 300 main event. It is worth noting that Magomed Ankalaev is also in a great position for the next title shot coming off his victory over Johnny Walker in January that grew his loss-less streak to 12 straight fights.
