From top to bottom, the UFC Brass has absolutely stacked the UFC 300 card. Every fight on the card includes at least one ranked fighter, with the final three fights all having a belt on the line. The night starts with a bang, as former UFC Champions Cody Garbrandt and Deiveson Figueiredo square off in hopes of climbing the bantamweight rankings. There's no doubt this is the best opening fight in UFC history in terms of the skill levels of the fighters.  Now getting into the title fights on the card, it starts with Justin Gaethje looking to defend his BMF belt against a newcomer to the lightweight division, Max Holloway. Fireworks and a bonus are guaranteed for this fight between two legends of the sport known for their boxing abilities and toughness in the octagon. Alexandre Pantoja's run as flyweight champion seems to just be getting started after his first title defense victory over Brandon Royval at UFC 296 this past December. The flyweight belt had changed hands many times in recent years with the division yet to have a dominant champion since the departure of Demetrius Johnson from the UFC to ONE Championship.  Pantoja can bring stability back to the division, as he is the most well-rounded fighter we have seen in recent years. His three victories over the #2 ranked Brandon Moreno and two victories over the #1 ranked Royval have put him in a position we do not see many champions, with few title challengers to face. UFC Middleweight Champion Sean Strickland takes on rising contender Dricus Du Plessis in the first numbered card of 2024 at UFC 297 in Toronto, Canada. While it originally seemed the two would have no ill will toward each other considering their equal hatred towards former champ Israel Adesanya, it quickly became clear that was not the case at the seasonal press conference before UFC 296. Tempers flared as fighters traded insults, with Strickland wasting no time throwing homophobic slurs in the South African's direction, referring to Dricus' relationship with his coaches that transcends the normal friendship, at least what we have in America. Dricus was quick to respond to Strickland, bringing up his father who used to abuse him, telling Strickland the beating he gives him is going to be even worse than his father's. Throughout 2023, the UFC has held events at a multitude of locations catering to fans all around the world. The variety of locations has shown us how different cultures can create electric arena environments in different ways. The first that comes to mind is the UFC Fight Night card held in Singapore in late August. The crowd singing "Zombie" in unison as The Korean Zombie walked out for his fight with Max Holloway produced goosebumps and sent shivers down the spines of many fans. I do believe that the Singapore crowd was rather lackluster in the fights leading up to the main event, but massively delivered supporting their favorite fighter even in defeat.  The UFC also traveled to Australia twice during the calendar year, once to Perth in February and the other to Sydney in September. Marlon "Chito" Vera has put together a 15-7 record in the UFC, finding himself at #6 in the bantamweight rankings. After Chito's unanimous decision victory over Pedro Munhoz, Champ Sean O'Malley made it clear that is who he wanted for his first title defense. I think it makes sense that O'Malley wants this fight as it is a chance for redemption, however, Chito has not proven to be worthy of a title shot considering his previous fights. While always dangerous on the feet, opponents have been able to weather his power in his previous two fights and even hand him a loss in one of them. As stated earlier, this matchup makes a ton of sense for O'Malley but gives the impression he is trying to take the easy way out with his first defense. October 21st in Abu Dhabi marks one of the year's biggest cards as Charles Oliveira gets his rematch against current World Champion Islam Mackhachev at UFC 294. Islam looks to extend his win streak to 13, while Charles attempts to complete the task he set after losing the belt just a year ago, to get it back. Not being granted the immediate rematch despite being a dominant champion in his reign, Charles was given a difficult opponent in Beneil Dariush who was on an eight-fight win streak entering the bout. On Friday UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jamahal Hill put out a video on his YouTube channel revealing an injury he had suffered playing a pick-up basketball game. He ruptured his Achilles and will undergo surgery, causing him to have to relinquish his title.
